He’s married to Heather, and much of their ‘spare’ time is occupied with their three children, in a fruitless attempt to stop them getting a Brummie accent. They’ll keep trying.

If you’re coming to study in Birmingham, he’d love to hear from you – please get in touch at craig.summers@city-church.org.uk

craig summers

assistant pastor

Craig was born and raised in the Midlands, and moved back here three years ago as our Assistant Pastor. As well as preaching and leading in the church, he also oversees the student ministry.

Craig trained and worked for a while as an engineer, but about ten years ago he started spending his time helping students to know our awesome God better. What he loves best about his job is seeing people get excited about who Jesus is, and his amazing heart for us (though his ears still prick up if you start talking about bikes or anything geeky).

susan marriott

student worker

Susan moved to Birmingham three years ago to be our Student Worker and has based her exploration of the City mainly around coffee shops. She doesn’t like tidying, tuna or tea but loves ‘dangerous’ fun (did somebody say catapult??) and blue cheese.

Susan first realised what a wonderful servant-king Jesus is as her Church small group read through Mark’s Gospel in her first year at Uni. These days she loves nothing more than helping others meet and grow more connected to Jesus.

Before working for City Church Susan worked as a GP in East Anglia and Uganda. The temperature in East Anglia suited her better but she preferred the birds and trees in East Africa. In both places (as in Birmingham) she found Jesus to be a wonderfully faithful servant-king.

If she can point you in the direction of a good coffee shop or help you get connected to life at City Church then do drop her an email at susan.marriott@city-church.org.uk

Ellie came to Birmingham 5 years ago to study Bakery and Patisserie Technology at UCB (yes, it's a real course!). She didn't like Birmingham at first, but promises that it grows on you! So after graduating she stayed in Birmingham to work as a ministry trainee for City for 2 years and is so excited to be staying on for another year as a trainee student worker. She loves cake (obviously!), cats and the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery tea rooms.

ministry trainee

Jake once ate 64 pieces of sushi, 3 bao buns and a whole bowl of coconut rice in 1 sitting. Jake would only ever passionately go on strike for two things, one being if they stopped putting preservatives and additives into peanut butter. Jake has come over from the US to get to know students in Birmingham so he's excited to meet y'all!

matty lavelle

ministry trainee

Matty studied Physics at the University of Birmingham and then spent a year working with UCCF (who support university Christian Unions). He got married to Ellie this summer. He's a big dog person and there's not much he loves more than walking his dog, Jess!

Megan studied History at the University of Birmingham and loves reading about Medieval monarchs and visiting castles. She also enjoys hiking and you will find her in the mountains whenever she gets the chance!

tom ridout

ministry trainee

Tom is a Chemical Engineering graduate from UoB working as a ministry trainee this year at City. He loves being outdoors and has baked a lot of bread over lockdown!

susanna davis

ministry trainee

Susanna studied History and History of Art at the University of Birmingham. She's commonly found laughing too loudly, in a silent gallery!

The Student Team

A number of the church family come along to Student Plus, week by week, and love investing in and getting to know students. Some of the team used to be students in Birmingham themselves, some of them just love hanging out with students. All of them are passionate about helping you become part of the family at City Church and growing in your love for Jesus in your time at University.

You'll find them leading Bible studies at Student Plus, dishing out curry at our curry nights, making fools of themselves at the Student weekend away or chatting to you on the phone or in a coffee shop to encourage you during a busy week. We love the Student Plus team and we think you will too!
